The Birth of Angel Falls (Part II)

As I stated in the last blog, I needed an ending to Angel Falls.  While I was writing, I didn't realize that I had gotten caught up in that old trap most writers eventually fall into....finishing your novel too quickly.  I had turned a great story with several twists into a "Diehard" action novel.  It was only for the last several pages or so, but it was still too "Diehard".  I read and reread the ending and once I eliminated the explosive ending, I wound up adding four chapters.  I was pleased with the ending.  (Sorry, I will not give away the ending because there could actually be people out there that want to read it.)

Since Angel Falls has been out of print, it's taken on a life of it's own.  I had turned it into a play and I created the screenplay, which ended up being long enough for a mini-series.  I promised myself that I would not write the screenplay unless I had a really good opening scene.

In the novel, the first two chapters or so consisted of the narrator describing how Angel Falls got along being up so high in the mountains.  This was the biggest discrepancy with my readers and even myself.  I knew that if I wanted to see Angel Falls on the big (or little) screen, I would need a great opening scene.  So needless to say, I didn't write the screenplay for a while.  Then it hit me.

It hit me just like the inspiration of the entire idea itself.  I saw a storm.  I saw just the feet of a man running through what appears to be a desert.  We soon learn that he is running up a path that is on a mountain.  He has no idea how he got there and there may be something...chasing him.  Thus is my opening to Alan Riehl's Angel Falls.  I finished the screenplay in about 3 months.  I even have a wonderful actor, Brian St. August interested  in playing one of the lead characters.

I am disappointed to find out that a Christian themed movie is not something that everyone is ready to jump on board for, despite the fact that this story has never been done quite like this before.  I am still pushing for it to be made and it will be.  There are no walls, only speed bumps.

A writer should never wait for anything to be produced.  You should always be writing.  I am turning my screenplay into a revised novel and I will publish with a major publisher this time.  I am also producing my screenplay: Online the Motion Picture on a shoestring budget with a talented but unknown cast.

I'll tell you more about that soon.  Feel free to ask questions, or comment.  I will always make myself available.
Alan
PS I don't edit the grammar in my blogs, so I already know that there may be some mistakes. :)

The Birth of Angel Falls (Part I)

I finished writing Angel Falls in early 2005.  It was published through Publish America as my first novel ever published.  I didn't pay to have any of my novels published and I would suggest to all of you not to pay anyone to publish.  It's not worth it at first.  There are other options if you take the time to check.

The inspiration for Angel Falls came straight from God.  There was nothing that sparked the idea but God.  It just appeared one day in my head.  Sometimes inspiration will hit like that and other times it will hit when you see something on television or hear a story, etc.  Angel Falls was originally going to be called, :A Small Town in Texas", but I changed it because that just didn't catch my ear, so to speak.

I wanted something completely different that would hold the reader's attention so much that they couldn't put the book down.  Although this was my first book published, it was not my first book written.  Married Alive was actually completed before Falls, but I decided to lead off with AF because I thought it was the stronger story.  It's funny how I look back and realize that Married Alive has outsold Angel Falls.  That will change.

AF is now out of print as of February 2012.  I have a few copies left, but I plan on holding on to those.  I also plan on rewriting Angel Falls and publishing it with a different company.  There will be a different cover as well.  I feel I have grown as a writer especially since I've been writing like crazy recently.  I started out with Angel Falls with the premise of only 36 people in a secluded God-fearing community up in the Sierra Blanca Mountains in Sierra Blanca Texas.  It happens to be a hop and a skip away from El Paso, Texas which is the town of my birth.  Once I started there I then  realized that I would have to at some point go into a detailed description about how the residents carried on a normal day without the modern conveniences we all take for granted.

This was probably the hardest thing to do, because I had to think about everything from going to the bathroom, to where the electricity came from.  I jammed everything into the first two chapters which I believe now to be a mistake, especially since it was a first person account as seen from the eyes of the resident and self-proclaimed "mayor",  Isaiah Morris.

Angel Falls and Married Alive are first person narratives, while The Treasure of Akkad is not.  There are some of the short stories in Levels that are and some that aren't.  I think you have to look at the story to make that decision for yourself.

The entire mystery unfolds around the eyes of our narrator, Isaiah.  Since I had the premise, and then decided to open with the "how to" of Angel Falls, all I needed was something to tie it all together.  Fortunately for me, Once I started writing, the characters (which I created as the story went along) started taking on minds of their own and everything was going beautifully.  The only thing that slowed me down was that I did a lot of research into the appropriate Bible scriptures to use to fit not only the situation but the story as well.  Now all I needed was an ending......(to be continued)

Don't force it...

Inspiration to write comes from anywhere and could come at any time.  You may be at a place where just writing down the idea or thought is all you can do.  Make sure you follow up on all of your ideas, even if you feel you lose the inspiration at a later date.

Being inspired as a writer means to open yourself up to your surroundings.  You don't have to be inspired by another author or a book.  Inspiration could come from any source and from none at all.  The idea for Angel Falls I believe, came straight from God, because there was no other influence present at the time.

Never push an idea or a book to work.  If it's not in you, it's not going to work.  Remember, if you don't enjoy writing then how do you expect anyone to enjoy reading your material.  Some people may try to push you to write a sequel, or on a particular topic.  Remember that suggestions are good; they show that the reader is interested in your writing, but don't let the reader decided what you should or even can write.

As a newer writer, it's easy to get caught up in trying to please the audience.  If you stay true to yourself and write what you enjoy, then your audience will enjoy it anyway.  As I mentioned in an earlier blog, I prefer to go with the story no matter what genre it happens to be in.

My new short story compilation novel, Levels, has a little bit of Christian Fiction; some horror; and mostly mystery with a twist!

The more you write, not only the better you get, but the more people will want to input their ideas.  Always write down everything because you never know when you'll need it!

Outline to success

I may have mentioned in an earlier blog about not chaining yourself to just one genre of writing.  I would like to expand on that statement by saying that I think you shouldn't limit yourself to just writing novels or plays or screenplays.  There's no reason why you can't write as many different types as possible.
I started out in novels.  The problem with that is there are a million novel writers out there who can be published as easily as paying $4000.00 to Tate Publishing or subjugating yourself to an online publisher that will not market your books, like Publish America.  By the way, Publish America is a great way to get your book published quickly, but I wouldn't continue to publish that way.

Let me tell you what I think are the important steps to prepping your book, screenplay, play, etc. before publication:

1.)  Start with an idea you would want to read about.  If you don't want to write about the topic then that will be conveyed to the reader and they will lose interest.  You do not have to be an English Major to write a book.  Have an original idea that doesn't include what half of the world is writing about.

2.) Write like people really talk!  If you are writing about teenagers please remember how they talk.  "I truly deem you worthy of dating" is way off base.  Some writers try too hard to entrance their readers with big words or fancy talking and they are way out of their league.  Stick with what you know.

3.) You don't have to have a great ending right off the bat but some writers prefer to work backwards.  Sometimes having a great idea is enough to start.  If you have trouble starting your novel then start writing down a list of events you want to happen (it doesn't have to be in sequence) and maybe some character background.

4.)  Don't worry about Writer's Block because it will eventually happen.  during this frustrating period, be sure to continue to write down notes about events or characters.  If you do this, the Writer's Block will more quickly disappear as opposed to just shelving it.

5.) Don't pressure yourself to keep the novel within a certain length.  If you constrain yourself then you will add more pressure than you have to and there will be mental delays.

6.)  Have a loved one read the novel as you go or when it's finished.  Make sure it is someone who loves to read.  Their insight as a reader can be invaluable and it also helps finding mistakes.

7.)  Never publish your book without having it edited.  If you are editing it yourself as I do mine, then be prepared to read and re-read your novel several times.  You may not always catch a mistake the first time around.  If you think you should edit it one more time than do it.  Always be sure you have the best possible material for print.  Some Publishers will edit it for you but it takes a lot longer.

The more time you take on your project, the better it will be the first time out.  I recommend using Movie Magic (at least version 6) to write any project.  It will guide you on plays, screenplays, novels and more.  It is the best investment I ever made.

I have a copyrighted British Sitcom being submitted and I am turning my first book, Angel Falls, into a Mini-Series.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions.  God Bless until next time.  Alan Riehl

Writing several projects at once

I believe that no writer should bog themselves down with more than a few multiple writing projects.
The answer is really easy: You get confused.
It's easy to get bogged down when inspiration hits.  As a writer the fear of writer's block is always present.  The problem with taking on several projects is that they have a tendency to bleed into each other.  I like to write wherever my inspiration takes me, which leads me to different genres.  This can cause a major problem if you're writing a Science Fiction, Mystery, and Comedy all at the same time.  I limit myself to no more than 3 projects at once even though I have over 30 projects waiting for me to bring them to life.
Never rush your writing unless you are under contract to do so.  The more time you can put into your "babies", the better the outcome will be. I am writing ONLINE: the Motion Picture, which is the screenplay of my produced play; Brutal: The Las Cruces Serial Killings, which is a murder mystery; and another novel which is a best kept under wraps for the time being.  I am almost finished with Online but I make it a point to also add pages to Brutal and the other project as I feel inspired.  There will be plenty of time to rush yourself when you make it big and you have deadlines.  Now let the creative juices flow, even if they take a while longer than you'd like.
Keep writing down notes and ideas for your other projects though so you don't forget any of the wonderful things that will improve your creations.

Finding your way.

I have always had an independent spirit.  I respect those that deserve respect but I can not let my life go in the direction that others seem best.

One major thing I learned is that you have to follow your heart.  If you know where you want to be you have to follow your own path.  Don't get me wrong, I highly advise that if you can get input from someone knowledgeable then you can use it to further your dream.

There are too many people trying to copy successful writing.  When a popular Vampire book comes out then hundreds of Vampire books come out in response to what appears to be a demand for the Genre.

I prefer to write what is in my heart and not what other people are doing because I want my writing to be original and not something that will prolong any kind of longevity in the Literary world.

I encourage you all to go with your original conception, no matter how bizarre people may think it is.  The movie and book industry is craving originality, so keep to your ideas and God Bless.

My writing...

What can I say about my writing?  How about the fact that I have ADD and have never had the patience to read .  I'm not saying I have never read anything; I read Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton and The Amityville Horror.  Both are easy reads (if you can get past the DNA explanation in Jurassic Park), so that may be the reason why I was able to read them.

How can I be a writer, you say?  I have been told by those that have read my novels that my stories are original and they enjoy the original writing.  The fact that I am not trying to emulate my favorite Author has been noted as a huge plus to my writing.

I really love the old movie Serials that had the cliffhangers at the end, where you wondered if the hero would survive until next week.  My books are written the same way: easy reads with a cliffhanger ending to leave you in suspense until the next book.  I've been told by several avid readers that although some of the more famous Authors that have 700-800 page books are good but have several parts where the reader is lost in boredom.  My goal is to alleviate that problem.

My first novel: Angel Falls, is  a Christian Fiction Mystery published in 2005.  A Utopian Existence. That's what the residents in Angel Falls believe they have in their secluded town where the temperature is a constant 65-67 degrees.  Hidden in the mountains located in Hudspeth County, between El Paso, Texas, and Sierra Blanca, Texas, is a community with only 36 residents residing at any one time.  A God-Fearing community with very few modern conveniences, yet seemingly content.  Who is the mysterious stranger, and why will his announcement signal the end of Angel Falls?  What is the biggest secret of Angel Falls and who will die as a result of this knowledge?

In 2007, Married Alive came to life.  Married Alive is a modern-day fable, with a dash of truth, and enough humor to keep you guessing how this marriage stays intact.  It's a he said/she said story a married couple we'll call, Conrad and Jan.  Conny is a walking metaphor for everything that's wrong with men nowadays.  Jan is his pregnant wife who shows a great deal of intelligence but loves her man anyway.  They takes turns narrating every other chapter as if they were talking with a Psychologist.  Truth? Sometimes. Relatable? Definitely!

In 2010 I published what I had researched to be as the first fictional account of the 2003 Baghdad Museum theft.  P.G. Jeckyll is an International Art Dealer who caters to collectors who aren't afraid to purchase pieces that have been acquired through less than reputable means.  Enter: The Sargon Cube which is part of an incredible collection at the Museum in Baghdad.  Using the American invasion of Iraq as a backdrop, Akkad follows the story of a priceless artifact that gets stolen not once...but twice!  Add a  homicide and you will wonder if even the husband and wife investigators from UNESCO can put the pieces of the missing treasure together.

All 3 are available at publishamerica.net and signed copies are available on Ebay.

I had my first play produced about a subject that no one has covered......until now...

"ONLINE(copyright 2011) is a 20-something play based around Jason Griggs; a young man who treats women like playthings until an argument with his girlfriend Alison, leads to her leaving him for another woman.

Jason's ego takes over as he attempts to track her exploits on a social networking website called Facespace. With the help of his Psych Major f
riend Heather, and "not the sharpest tool in the shed" friend Grant, Jason creates a female persona to join Facespace and infiltrate the Lesbian clique.
Jason ends up biting off more than he can chew and ends up experiencing more than he bargains for.
Throw into the mix Jason's husband controlling sister, Amy and her whipped hubby Peter.
Once the die is cast, secrets surface, games are played, and some things are not quite what they seem in this comedic romp through the cyber world we have all become a part of.
Although ONLINE is a 20-something play, those who have read it in all age groups have enjoyed the fast paced, possibly even realistic look at social interaction on the internet. It is unlike anything you have ever experienced before, except of course actually being......ONLINE.There is a mature theme, sexual in nature with adult language.

My next novel, Levels, will be out in mid 2012.  The first story, LEVELS, is about a young man named Clifford who was abandoned by his family and adopted by a man named who abuses him physically and mentally. Clifford soon meets his only friend in Cornelius Calhoun III who teaches our Clifford laughter for the first time. Clifford's new friend takes him on a ride of vengeance and pleasure that changes everything, as he learns that maybe his friend isn't everything he appears to be. (Mystery with Christian overtones)

THE NATIVITY follows Jennifer McCabe who's faith is tested by having to endure in a few years what most people face in a lifetime. Every Christmas holds a new tragedy for the young girl. Will she be able to keep her word to her Father and finish building the life size Nativity scene in her back yard before the next Christmas? Christian Fiction (this story has been copyrighted 2011 Alan Riehl)

LABELS is a very short story that lets us see through the eyes of a serial killer justifying the need to eradicate all that is beautiful. That which has been labeled "beauty" by the killer, must be destroyed. The killer describes beauty as "labels" produced by the media and peer pressure. The insane plan of carnage must be carried out to satiate the hatred of all that is beautiful. (Fiction with a twist ending)

THE WAR is another very short story where it appears an age old one-sided war could be taking a turn as one brave soul has a plan to find a way to strike back once and for all. (Fiction with a twist ending)

MYTH CATCHERS is the longest of the stories at around 42 pages. This is the precursor to the series I am planning. Ten year old Curtis Armstrong can't understand where his Father went to so many years ago. The only thing that his Mother still has is an old pair of pants of his Dad's. Curtis' sister is infatuated with Unicorns and has her entire room decorated with the little creatures, which irritates him to no end. Strange things start happening around the Armstrong household after Curtis finds the pants. Unicorns of his sister's that he sells at a garage sale return with no explanation and destroyed figurines are found undamaged. Curtis starts school and even meets his nemesis, Darla, when things really start going crazy. Is it his new found imagination or is there really a Unicorn now standing in his closet wearing his Dad's pants and speaking perfect English? (Fantasy)
